Data size

kB is 1000 bytes. KiB is 1024. The page does not treat them as synonyms.

How it works

Drive makers use powers of ten: MB = 1000² bytes, GB = 1000³. Memory and many operating systems use powers of two: MiB = 1024², GiB = 1024³. At gigabyte scale the gap is over 7%.

Internet megabits are not in the list. Eight megabits equal one megabyte only when both “megas” mean the same thing. Convert to bytes first.

Questions

Why does a drive look smaller?

The box used GB as 1000³ and the system showed GiB as 1024³. The ruler changed.

What does KB mean?

Here kB is decimal and KiB is binary. Vendor labels vary. Read the factor, not only the letter.

Bits or bytes?

Bytes. Eight bits, in the ordinary sense.
